I have to admit, I'm pretty fond of chocolate. Okay, I'm a little bit addicted to it. And going without it is really, really difficult. So, what if chocolate could be good for you? And what if it didn't impact negatively upon the environment because it was palm oil free?
This week, I was lucky enough to try IQ Superfood Chocolate. I tried the original bean-to-bar and the plush peppermint.
Original Bean-to-Bar contains organic cocoa beans, organic coconut blossom sugar and organic cocoa butter. The plush peppermint contains the same ingredients with the addition of organic peppermint oil. Each little bar contains just 197 calories.
It's a dream come true isn't it? Someone offers you a bar of chocolate when you're on a diet and then tells you that eating it would be good for you. But there's that old adage, if something looks too good to be true then it probably is. So I have to admit to being a little bit concerned that IQ chocolate might be lacking in taste.
So with a bit of trepidation, my husband and I sat down with a cup of tea to enjoy the plush peppermint bar. The flavour of this was really quite incredible. The chocolate has a taste I can only describe as fresh. It was as tasty and sweet as normal chocolate but it just didn't feel so processed. This must be due to the fact that the IQ bars are made using raw cacao beans that have been fermented rather than being subjected to the usual methods of making chocolate.
The only added ingrediets are organic, natural products like coconut blossom sugar, organic cocoa butter and organic peppermint oil. The peppermint oil wasn't overpowering, but it did add a really nice peppermint undertone both while I was eating it and as an after taste.
Spurred on by the success of the pepermint plush bar, we decided to save the original bean-to-bar until the evening. I've always enjoyed good dark chocolate with a glass of red wine, so we thought we'd put that to the test.
I can confirm that the original bean-to-bar is by some distance the best plain chocolate I've tasted. And that's not me being biased because it's palm oil free, it tastes amazing. As with the peppermint plush, the taste of the bean-to-bar is so much more fresh than I have come to expect from normal chocolate. And of course, the knowledge that it is actually good for me is pretty comforting too.
In fact, it is great for healthy hair, skin and bones, increased strength, more energy and an improved mood. It is high in Magnesium, Zinc, Potassium and Iron. It contains B1, B2, B3, B6 and C vitamins as well as other beneficial enzymes and minerals. From an ethical point of view, IQ chocolate strive to lead the way when it comes to sourcing ingredients, trading and distribution.
A few people have been asking me whether I'd found a good palm oil free chocolate and I can confirm, this is a brilliant one.
